The guqin seven-string zither distinguishes itself among other Chinese musical instruments for its wide range, rich timbre, and extensive nuances. The entirety of the guqin’s hollowed body serves as a resonating chamber, and as such, the pitches produced—on open strings, stopped strings, or as harmonics—acquire qualities that are often received as ethereal and exquisite. The instrument’s whole upper surface, long and slightly convex, functions also as a fingerboard, which gives maximum flexibility to left-hand movements in order to achieve the intricacies, ornamentation, and sound qualities prescribed by particular pieces or styles. This is accompanied in no small part by the multiplicity of right-hand plucking movements and finger techniques. Altogether these qualities of the guqin have contributed to its eminence of being an instrument that is most capable of communicating human emotions and spirit in Chinese music.

This talk will introduce the guqin and its music through the instrument’s construction, sounding principles, performing techniques, and strings. The speaker will also share his insight of the instrument through performance demonstration.
