四年的暌违新作《The Party》包含四首歌曲,分别是《Lovers at School》、《One Of Three》、《The Party》、《The Fire Within》,将于11月23日官方同步发行。

With “The Party” EP tour, From Your Balcony returns to China after a long absence with brand new songs. Old fans will recognize that the new material stays true to the spirit of 2009’s “The Leaver and the Left”, while building on the songwriting and the production in a natural way. There is no dubstep bass, trap drums, or any kind of trend-chasing, just emotionally charged songs built around a core of piano and voice.  All of the electronic production elements are incorporated with great subtlety and musicality. And as well as the arrangement and production comes together as whole, it’s easy to tell that these are songs written on the piano—one can imagine a stripped-down version of the EP featuring only piano and voice, and the songs would have no problem standing on their own.

One stylistic standout is the title track, with its clarinet trio intro moving straight into an expansive, driving verse with an almost new-wave feeling. The insistent but simple drum machine is a new sound for the band, but it never sounds out of place. The soft synth pads in the background give a sense of space and distance, like driving on the highway gazing out of the window at a faraway sunset. And despite all of its upbeat characteristics, the song still retains a pensive feeling, just as one might admire the beauty of the sunset but also wonder with doubt where the highway is taking them.

Throughout the new EP, Nicolas Swierczek’s vocals continue to evoke many of the same emotions as on “The Leaver and the Left”. Feelings of melancholy, uncertainty, and both the elation and the disenchantment of love. His voice is always intimate, always close. Even when the other instruments create large soundscapes, there’s no question that Nicolas is singing directly to you, the listener. This intimacy is never broken, even amidst the EP’s most cathartic moments.

When From Your Balcony returns to China in December, it’s sure to be a great show for both new fans and old fans, full of beautiful songs and expert musicianship. Be sure not to miss out!
