Red Scarf was founded in 2013 with drummer Deng Boyu, guitarist Li Xing and wind instrumentalist Lao Dan. Drawing from improvisation and noise music, avant-garde music, free jazz, progressive rock, experimental folk, punk and funk metal, the band has been active in the experimental music scene in China. Red Scarf has not only its own unique way to interpret sound, space, structure and improvised form, but also characteristic ways to use instruments. Emphasizing expression of diverse emotional details, with a taste of punk, the musicians bring out dense tension in their music. However, they keep their music grounded, with expressions deeply rooted in their sensibility of routine life, which maintains their relevance to their listeners.

Members of the band have collaborated with many important musicians worldwide, including Lee Ranaldo, Akira Sakata, Sabu Toyozumi, Benoit Stasiaczyk, Federico Casagrande, Mamer, Xiao He, Wu Na, Dawanggang and Wutiaoren. The trio has performed in OCT-LOFT Jazz Festival and many other important art events and has released several albums on Modern Sky and American experimental music label fo’c’sle.

In the upcoming tour, Red Scarf will be joined by American cellist Theresa Wong and clarinet player John McCowen to present a brand-new experience of improvisation music.

Red Scarf is:

Li Xing

Li Xing is a freelance guitarist, composer and music producer. From psychedelic rock, progressive rock to free jazz, and on to sound art, he extracts phrases from diverse styles to reconstruct into his own vocabulary. Inspired by The Book of Changes and divination, taking Yin and Yang as a reference, Li Xing adopts noise, environmental sounds, serialism, aleatoric or chance-controlled music to explore the relationship between sound and contemporary Chinese society. He also organizes contemporary art exchange projects.

Deng Boyu

Deng Boyu is a drummer in various bands of different styles, including rock, jazz, noise and free improvisation. He is also an avant-garde electronic musician and released his first electronic solo album Wild Air Waves in 2012. He formed Red Scarf band with Li Xing and Lao Dan in 2014, released self-titled debut album in 2016 and second album They Know That We Know They’re Lying in 2018. In 2017 he released improvisation album Universal with Mamer.

Lao Dan

Lao Dan started learning saxophone at the age of 8 and later switched to Chinese bamboo flute. Focusing on the artistry and freedom of performance, he gradually develops his own language and skills in playing traditional Chinese bamboo flute; offers his audience an integrated listening experience. Lao Dan is also a monster saxophone improviser. Informed by many western masters, he has found a fresh and unrestrained sound of his own. He released his first solo bamboo flute album Going After Clouds and Dreams (Modern Sky World Music) in 2017 and first saxophone solo cassette album Functioning Anomie (WV Sorcerer Productions) in 2018.
