Sagar Veena

Born in Lahore, Punjab, to the eminent lawyer, politician, philosopher, and activist Raza Kazim, her musical journey has been deeply intertwined with a commitment to preserve and evolve traditional art forms.
Noor Zehra Kazim's musical lineage is profoundly rooted in her familial heritage. Her father, Raza Kazim, is renowned for inventing the Sagar Veena, a captivating stringed instrument reminiscent of the Vichitra Veena and Chitra Veena. Together with her father, she co-manages the Sanjan Nagar Institute of Philosophy and Arts (SIPA), a bastion of artistic exploration and education. Since its inception in the early 1970s, she has been the sole performer of the Sagar Veena, showcasing its enchanting melodies to audiences both nationally and internationally.
With a career spanning over four decades, Kazim has garnered widespread acclaim for her mastery of the Sagar Veena and her distinctive interpretation of Indian classical music as a non-Indian artist. Her foray into the mainstream came with her debut on Coke Studio in season 3, and she returned triumphantly in season 9 as part of Team Noori. Kazim's musical prowess extends beyond performance; she is also the mother of Ali Noor and Ali Hamza, the lead vocalist and guitarist, respectively, of the acclaimed band Noori.
Noor Zehra Kazim's musical odyssey is marked by rigorous training and relentless pursuit of excellence. She embarked on her formal training in 1971 under the tutelage of Rajeshwari Datta at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in London, England. Further honing her craft, she ventured to Berkeley, California, to study at the prestigious Ali Akbar College of Music. Upon returning to Pakistan, she immersed herself in the teachings of Ustad Shareef Khan Poonchwala, solidifying her position as Pakistan's foremost Sagar Veena player.
Kazim's musical journey has taken her across the globe, enchanting audiences in Japan, Norway, and beyond with the evocative strains of the Sagar Veena. Her ongoing quest is to explore and innovate within the realm of 'Sanjan Sangeet,' a musical tradition she hopes to define and enrich.
In recognition of her unparalleled contributions to music, Kazim has been honored with the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award in 2023 and the esteemed "Malika-e-Musequi Roshan Ara Begum Gold Medal" by Hayat Ahmed Khan, the founder Secretary General of the All Pakistan Music Conference (APMC).
