About the Film
This film is a collection of musical performances, folk images, TV excerpts and audio/visual artifacts from the heart and soul of Sumatra. This fascinating island is the Northwestern entry point to the Indonesian archipelago. Its 40 million inhabitants are primarily Muslim and speak the national language of Bahasa Indonesian. Most of the film was shot during a span of two weeks in August of 2004 in and around the cities of Medan, Padang, Bukitinggi, and Padang Panjang. It features a variety of street musicians, nightclub acts, folk groups, and incidental happenings which surround musicians in their daily lives. This film has no narration nor is it meant to express any particular theme or agenda. This is intuitive folk cinema and film collage, shot on location as it unfolded and assembled in an attempt to capture the essence of being there. All material was shot before the “Tsunami” of December 26, 2004 destroyed the city of Banda Aceh and the northwest coastal areas of Aceh province. The Bandah Aceh segment was shot by David Martinez in 2003.

Alan Bishop
Alan Bishop is a founding member of Seattle's avant-garde and genre-defying Sun City Girls, whose career spanned 27 years and over fifty releases. His work in Sun City Girls, with Richard Bishop and Charles Gocher, alone stands as a testament to his fearless exploration of the outer reaches of improvisation and composition. And as Alvarius B., Bishop has penned hundreds of his own original folk songs in a primitive “out” style that is extremely unique. And as an interpreter of other people’s work, his songbook also includes hundreds of cover songs from the obscure to the very familiar. Over much of the past twelve years, Bishop has been based in Cairo, composing & recording new Alvarius B. material while simultaneously establishing his own Egyptian-based band, The Invisible Hands and joining forces with Sam Shalabi and Maurice Louca in the trio Dwarfs of East Agouza. Bishop is also the co-founder of the Sublime Frequencies record label and he owns and operates Abduction Records.
