Taking It On—A Londoner’s Perspective on Improvised Music
Speaker: John Edwards
Free improvisation is the most challenging form of music-making.
At its best, the practitioners are hyper-aware every millisecond, hear every micro- sound that occurs and almost mind-read the other musicians present. It involves an animal-like state of being, where every sense works on an extreme level of intensity, where every vibration is felt, where the ear can indeed hear a pin-drop in the centre of a raging storm.
Empathy, sharing, supporting.
Nobody can judge the music to be right or wrong, good or bad. Only the improviser themself carries the responsibility of their own actions and reactions within the moment—this could be a burden but is truly a luxury.
