Mathew Ngau Jau is a 72-year-old member of the Kenyah Ngorek, an indigenous group from Long Semiyang in Sarawak, one of Malaysia’s territories on Borneo. He is a professional Sape' performer, craftsman, and teacher—one of the few community-recognized authorities on the instrument. His most recent major international performance was a collaborative original piece with the Singapore Chinese Orchestra for the opening of the Singapore International Festival of Arts in 2019.
