Edition Redux is the most recent of Ken Vandermark's ensembles, adding to the MacArthur Prize winner's internationally and critically acclaimed series of bands which include The Vandermark 5, FME, The Territory Band, The Resonance Ensemble, Entr'acte, Made To Break, and Marker. In addition to Vandermark, who plays saxophones and clarinet with the group, this quartet is composed of Erez Dessel (keyboards), Lily Finnegan (drums), and Beth McDonald (tuba/electronics), who represent the next wave of Chicago's creative music scene.
The music of Edition Redux includes the range of Vandermark's interests, incorporating influences from the experimental jazz of the AACM and different schools of improvised music developed in Europe with a post-punk attitude. The band presented its music for the first time during a U.S. tour in April of 2023, and recorded its initial album, Better a Rook Than a Pawn (Audiographic Records) at Experimental Sound Studio in Chicago immediately following that series of concerts. Called "Essential New Music," by Magnet magazine and picked as one of "The Best Jazz on Bandcamp, January 2024," this recording was released to coincide with a trip to Europe for a series of performances by the ensemble in October of the same year. Edition Redux toured in the States during February of 2024 to develop new material for its second album, Broadcast Transformer, which received 4 stars in All About Jazz.
Broadcast Transformer was released to coincide with a return to Europe for a tour in November where the band was a featured group on the Festival Internacional Jazz Madrid and Music Unlimited 38 festival in Wels, Austria.

Ken Vandermark (USA 1964) is an improvising musician and composer who plays tenor and baritone saxophone, Bb and bass clarinet; in 1999 was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship in music. He moved to Chicago from Boston in 1989, and has worked from the early 1990s onward, both as a performer and organizer in North America and Europe, recording in an array of contexts with many internationally renowned musicians (such as Fred Anderson, Ab Baars, Peter Brötzmann, Sylvie Courvoisier, Tim Daisy, Kris Davis, Dieb 13, Hamid Drake, Terrie Ex, Mats Gustafsson, Elisabeth Harnik, Steve Heather, Didi Kern, Kent Kessler, Christof Kurzmann, Paul Lytton, Joe McPhee, Andy Moor, Jason Moran, Ikue Mori, Joe Morris, Paal Nilssen-Love, Eddie Prevóst, Mette Rasmussen, Tom Rainey, Eric Revis, Jasper Stadhouders, Chad Taylor, John Tilbury, Mars Williams, and Nate Wooley).
His current group activity includes the bands Edition Redux, Lean Left, The DKV Trio, DEK, his large ensemble Entr'acte, the ongoing Momentum projects; duos with Terrie Ex, Christof Kurzmann, Damon Locks, Paal Nilssen-Love, Mars Williams, and Nate Wooley; and work as a solo performer.
Ken co-founded Catalytic Sound in 2012, an organization dedicated to the economic sustainability of creative improvising musicians, and since then has been its director. In 2014 he began Audiographic Records, an independent music label. From 2015-2024 Ken was the co-curator of Option, a music and interview series held at Experimental Sound Studio in Chicago; and in 2024 he was the programmer of the Music Unlimited 38, a festival held in Wels, Austria.
Half of each year is spent touring in Europe, North America, Latin America, and Japan; his concerts and numerous recordings have been critically acclaimed at home and abroad. Ken's activity as a writer includes liner notes for a variety of recordings; and contributions to the eighth edition of John Zorn's Arcana: Musicians on Music, the music journal Sound American, the Spanish language periodical, El Estado Mental, and Catalytic Quarterly.
Erez Dessel

Erez Dessel (USA 1998) is an improvising pianist and composer living and working in Chicago, Illinois. He holds a BM in jazz piano from the New England Conservatory of Music.
Dessel's work explores the piano as a vehicle for human connection. A primary part of his practice is the history of the instrument as a tool for storytelling and world-building.
His current group activity includes the bands Edition Redux, Look Both Days, Ra Bishop, and Banana Acid; as well as frequent work as a solo performer. Dessel created and curates the Night School series, which presents video artists and improvising musicians in a spontaneous performance context. Dessel has toured nationally and internationally, including performances in Europe and Korea and festival appearances at Michigan's Edgefest, the Catalytic Sound Festival, the Madrid Jazz Festival, and the Wels' Music Unlimited. His concerts and recordings have received critical acclaim, with releases on Endectomorph Music, Ornette Coleman Fiend Club, Audiographic Records, and Amalgam Music, and in 2025, he was selected as an Arts Club of Chicago fellow. He has worked continuously both as a performer and organizer in Chicago, recording in an array of contexts with many internationally renowned musicians (including Ken Vandermark, Tim Daisy, Kim Alpert, and Ben Hall).
Beth McDonald

Beth McDonald is a classically trained tuba player gone awry. She performs mostly as an improviser, using the tuba acoustically or in conjunction with electronic processing.
Her current musical projects include: Edition Redux, Three Grebes (with Franki Hand on voice, guitar, accordion, violin, etc. and Ike Turner on guitar, drums, percussion, etc.), and Where Were We (with Erez Dessel on keys and Tyler Damon on drums).
She has also recently collaborated in other contexts with Chicago-based artists such as Kim Alpert, Josh Berman, Hannah Bureau, Andrew Clinkman, Lia Kohl, Mabel Kwan, Riley Leitch, Ro(b)//ert Lundberg, Nick Macri, Zander Raymond, Macie Stewart, and Ken Vandermark.
In a previous musical life, Beth toured and played as a contemporary classical, orchestral, and chamber musician. Among other highlights, she has performed at the Lucerne Festival, Aspen Music Festival, and the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, and Lieksa Brass Week. From 2011 through 2014, Beth was the Artistic Director of the August Noise JP, where she worked to bring unexpected music to public spaces and to engage her fellow musicians in their community. During this time, Beth also performed with Sound Icon, Discovery Ensemble, and the Brian Friedland Big Band. Beth holds degrees from New England Conservatory, Northeastern Illinois University, and the University of Kentucky.
Lily Finnegan

Lily Glick Finnegan is a Chicago born and based drummer, composer, improviser, and organizer. She leads her own quartet, Heat On, which released their debut album in 2025 on Cuneiform Records. Finnegan is also a member of Ken Vandermark's Edition Redux, punk band Cucuy, and the Sarah Clausen Trio. She co-leads an improvising duo project with violinist gabby fluke-mogul. Lily also plays with various singer-songwriters including Hannah Frances and Julia Blair. In addition, she has collaborated with artists including James Brandon Lewis, Nicole Mitchell, Tomeka Reid, Macie Stewart, Fay Victor, Sylvia Bolognesi, Ed Wilkerson, Shanta Nurullah, Dave Rempis, Katie Ernst, Jason Stein, Devon Gates, Katinka Kleijn, Emma Dayhuff and Lia Kohl.
In 2021, she completed a Masters of Music from Berklee College of Music. She received a full scholarship to participate in the Berklee Global Jazz Institute. At Berklee she was part of the Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice where she was mentored by Terri Lyne Carrington, Kris Davis, and Linda May Han Oh. Prior to attending Berklee, she earned a Bachelor of Arts double major in Sociology and Music from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Lily co-curates the Option Series, a showcase of contemporary approaches to improvisation and composition held at Experimental Sound Studio. She was spotlighted as a "Chicagoan of Note" by The Chicago Reader for her musical organizing work in the city in 2023. In 2025, she became a member of the independent music cooperative Catalytic Sound. She is a drum teacher, with openings for new students.
