A founding member of the legendary art-punk band Aunt Sally, Phew went to work as a solo artist after the band broke up in 1979. She released a collaborative single with Ryuichi Sakamoto in 1980. In 1981 came her first solo album Phew, produced with Conny Plank and CAN's Holger Czukay and Jaki Liebezeit. In 1992, her third album Our Likeness was released on Mute Records, again produced at Conny's studio with Jaki Liebezeit and Alexander Hacke of Einstürzende Neubauten. Since 2010, she has released a series of works combining voice and electronic music, gaining international acclaim as an electronic artist. She also released collaborative works with Ana da Silva (Raincoats), Seiichi Yamamoto (ex.Boredoms) and other artists. In October 2021, her latest solo album New Decade was released worldwide on music labels Traffic and Mute, and was reissued in February 2023. In April 2022, her desktop punk unit 106 with Dowser N released two 1-cassettes.

Nagashima's work on the live sound remix of a movie directed by Sogo Ishii led him to work on music and sound for numerous titles spanning across multiple media. His music work for movies include Sogo Ishii's Angel Dust, episode 3 of Katsuhiro Otomo’s Memories—Cannon Fodder, Shinji Aoyama's Eli, Eli, Lema Sabachthani?, Kunitoshi Manda's The Kiss, Hiroshi Takahashi’s The Sylvian Experiments, Kiyoshi Kurosawa's Beautiful New Bay Area Project, Ryusuke Hamaguchi's Touching the Skin of Eeriness, and Park Ki-young's PyeongChang Paralympics Official Film Fear Not. He also performs in Dowser, an electronic music group. He was appointed associate professor at the Graduate School of Film and New Media, Tokyo University of the Arts in 2011, and professor since 2014.
