——Jeff Greene,

“Some people like to call the Dolan Muqam ‘Central Asian jazz’, and you can really hear where that idea comes from when the melodic instruments, kalun and rawap, start up their improvised syncopated riffs.”

— Rachel Harris, SOAS University of London

“...the Dolan Maqam is polyphonic, with each instrument playing a different melody or rhythmic line. This has led to it being compared to New Orleans Jazz and even being called Chinese Desert jazz.”

— Jeff Greene, artist and musician

Mekit Dolan Muqam: Traditional Music and Dance of Uyghur

Founded by a group of passionate folk artists from Mekit County, Xinjiang, the Mekit Dolan Muqam Group performs traditional music and dance of the Dolan people, a sub-group of the Uyghur people. They have twice been invited to perform at Shanghai World Music festival and have made a splash in Beijing 798 Art Zone and at Hanggai Music Festival. They are also well received on international level, having been invited to perform in many stages such as Le Festival de l’Imaginaire in Paris, France in 2005, Salaam Music Village Festival, in London, UK in 2006, and Rudolstadt Festival, Germany in 2012.

Since ancient times, Dolan people have been living as hunters on the edge of the formidable Taklamakan Desert, where the Yarkand and Tarim rivers flow. The unique environment has bestowed on them a unique culture, which is reflected in the Dolan Muqam, a traditional music-poetry suite that has been transmitted orally for centuries. It is considered part of the Uyghur Muqam, which has been designated by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

In Dolan Muqam, musicians always sing with all their strength that the singing may actually sound like roaring. The beating of their hand drums is so heavy that the dynamic created can be compared to the drumming in rock music. The timbres of kalun, Dolan rawap (a plucked instrument) and Dolan gijak (a vertically-held fiddle), interwoven with a chorus of singers and drummers and presented with the swirling Dolan dance, will create a trance-like atmosphere for the audience to rejoice.
