Widely considered one of the most important European improvisers currently on the scene, Portuguese saxophonist Rodrigo Amado is a master of the instrument with immaculate technique and fascinating expressiveness of sound, embracing all the freedom that free jazz and improvised music allow him. Currently leading several cutting-edge formations, like The Bridge or The Attic, Amado is always looking for new challenges and new musical perspectives that will allow him to develop his music. In this new trio, named New Orbit, he brings together two of the most important musicians of the vibrant Berlin jazz scene, Joel Grip and Michael Griener. New Orbit is all about that—a deep dive in a scene that Amado recognizes as crucial in the shape of jazz to come. Both Grip and Griener are master improvisers in their own name, and this specific trio configuration represents a pure fusion of different languages and backgrounds, all united under the demanding discipline of total improvisation. Instinctive in the delivery, the trio of Amado, Grip and Griener aims at a plane of boldness and consistency, of elevation of the soul and physics. Improvised red-hot magma and harmonic fields of timbric and textural wealth, in the same breath. Always open.

Nominated, for the eleventh consecutive year, by the El Intruso International Critics Poll (more than 50 critics, from 18 countries) as one of the top 5 tenor saxophonists in activity, alongside Evan Parker, Joe Lovano, Charles Lloyd, Ken Vandermark, Jon Irabagon, Ivo Perelman, James Brandon Lewis, Chris Potter or Ingrid Laubrock.
Rodrigo Amado released in 2023 the first album by The Bridge, his new all-star quartet. Beyond the Margins(Trost), featured three top names in avant garde jazz—Alexander von Schlippenbach, Ingebrigt Haker Flaten and Gerry Hemingway—and was unanimously acclaimed by the public and critics as a key piece of new European improvisation. In 2024, one of his most intense periods so far, he released two other albums that made many of the Best Of lists of that year—La Grande Crue(No Business), the fourth album by The Attic trio, and Wrecks(Nariz Entupido), the debut album of his duo with organist David Maranha. 2025 promises to be another intense year for Amado, as he is releasing another two new albums—Further Beyond, the second register by The Bridge, and The Healing, documenting his ongoing duet with drummer Chris Corsano.
With The Bridge, with his American quartet (Joe McPhee, Kent Kessler and Chris Corsano), fronting Motion Trio (with cellist Miguel Mira and drummer Gabriel Ferrandini), or as part of Humanization 4tet, Amado has been touring extensively in Europe and the United States, performing in innumerable Festivals and venues all over the world, namely Snug Harbor in New Orleans, Hideout in Chicago, The Stone in New York, Bimhuis in Amsterdam, Quasimodo in Berlin, DOM in Moscow, Jazz House in Copenhagen, Cafe Oto in London, Pardon To Tu in Warsaw, Stadtgarten in Cologne, De Singer in Antwerp, Manufaktur in Stuttgart, Ha Concerts in Gent, Philharmonie in Luxembourg or the State Philharmony Hall in Oradea. His music has been the object of hundreds of reviews in magazines, newspapers and blogs all over the world, and his work critically acclaimed in leading publications like The Wire and Downbeat magazines, El País and Folha de São Paulo newspapers, or the Bandcamp Daily online.
With a discography of 30 albums under his own name and dozens of others as sidemen, he is unanimously considered one of the key players in European Jazz. As North American critic Stuart Broomer writes in his liner notes for This Is Our Language, "Amado is an emerging master of a great tradition, more apparent with each new recording or performance." And he goes on, about Amado's sound: "There's a rhythmic impetus, a bite in his sound, part grain, part beat, and it drives his lines forward, a sound and an impulse that are part him and part history, a fundamental impress on the world that tenor saxophonists like Coleman Hawkins, Eddie 'Lockjaw' Davis, Sonny Rollins, and Archie Shepp have been making for generations."

An improvising bassist who creates music in direct response to those around him, Joel Grip is grounded in a spontaneously fermented approach to sound, his music evolves within a shared sense of timing, vibration, and collective expression. Improvisation for Grip is more than a method—it's a practice of learning, discovery, and bold communication. He seeks a sound that is honest and immediate, embracing its reactive, rapid, and surprising nature. His goal: to push music toward ecstatic, intense, and transformative experiences.
Deeply connected to the history of Afro-American music—its roots and avant-garde movements on both sides of the Atlantic—Grip channels this legacy into celebratory, daring, and high-stakes performances. His holistic, handcrafted approach to music-making is inseparable from his commitment to sharing it. For him, music takes on a ceremonial role in familiar yet radical spaces—venues for regular gatherings of listeners and creators alike. Through this, he has become a vital figure in the improvised music scenes of Central and Northern Europe.
Joel Grip has lived and worked in Stockholm, Baltimore, Paris, and Berlin. He is a co-founder of several artist-run organizations, including Hagenfesten (Dala-Floda), Umlaut Records (Paris, Berlin, Stockholm), Au Topsi Pohl (Berlin), Umlicht Films (France, Sweden), Public Health Music (Ukraine, Sweden), and Curved Pitch.

An acclaimed German drummer whose music moves effortlessly between jazz tradition and free improvisation, Michael Griener was born in Nuremberg in 1968. Self-taught, he began performing professionally in the late 1980s, having performed over the years with innumerous outstanding improvisers like Mal Waldron, John Zorn, Aki Takase, Joëlle Léandre, Evan Parker, Butch Morris, Tony Malaby, Ellery Eskelin, Barry Guy, Keith Tippett, Mats Gustafsson, Alexander von Schlippenbach or Ken Vandermark. His performances can be heard on more than 70 recordings for celebrated labels such as Intakt, HatHut, FMP or Jazzwerkstatt.
In addition to his active performing career, Griener is a professor at the Hochschule für Musik Dresden and currently serves as Chair of the Deutsche Jazzunion. In 2025, he appeared on Daniel Blumberg's Academy Award–winning soundtrack for the film The Brutalist. He also collaborates closely with bassist Joel Grip in the trio Oùat and the performance group Klub Demboh.
With his refined sense of swing, deep rhythmic creativity, and openness to new musical encounters, Michael Griener is one of Europe's most distinctive and versatile drummers.
