Alexander Hawkins is widely recognised as one of the UK's most innovative and imaginative pianists and composers. He is self-taught with a great love and deep knowledge of the jazz tradition which he brings, along with classical references, to his compositions and performance.
These three musicians have played together for many years in other projects led by Hawkins, including his Quartet and Ensemble, and the Trio released their album Carnival Celestial on Intakt in 2023. Together in the Trio, the huge sound and immaculate sense of time of bassist Neil Charles and the empathic drumming of Stephen Davis produce a masterful interplay of freedom and structure, composition and improvisation.
Hawkins has worked with Anthony Braxton in a number of his projects. In 2018 the Trio performed with him in London, on Braxton's Standards[1]. In early January 2020 Braxton invited the Trio to join him on a European tour, recording each performance, and releasing the monumental 13-CD live box set Quartet (Standards) 2020.

Along with his solo performances, Hawkins works in a vast array of creative contexts including leading and composing for his Quartet and larger ensembles; in duo with South African drum legend Louis Moholo-Moholo and in Moholo's Blokes; his duos with Evan Parker, Tomeka Reid, John Surman, Sofia Jernberg, and Angelika Niescier, his Trios with Nicole Mitchell and Tomeka Reid, and with Tomeka and Chad Taylor, and with Neil Charles and Stephen Davis; and Decoy with John Edwards and Steve Noble, with Hawkins on Hammond B3. He also performs in projects of contemporary leaders—Anthony Braxton, Joe McPhee, Marshall Allen, John Surman and Ethio-jazz pioneer Mulatu Astatke.
Neil Charles

Neil Charles is one of the most in-demand musicians on the scene, with a huge array of credits to his name, including the groups of Jack DeJohnette, Byron Wallen, Jose James, Jerry Dammers, Courtney Pine, and Terence Blanchard. His own projects include Zed U of some years ago, and the more recent ensemble Dark Days which he also composed for. As well as being known as a bass player with a huge sound and immaculate sense of time, he is equally renowned as a producer aka Ben Marc.
Stephen Davis

Belfast-based drummer Stephen Davis is one third of heavyweight UK free-jazz trio, Bourne Davis Kane, alongside pianist Matthew Bourne and double-bassist Dave Kane. He also leads the quartet, Human, featuring Alexander Hawkins, Alex Bonney and Dylan Bates. He is the drummer in Anthony Braxton group The New Standard, and active in the UK and Europe playing with Mark Ribot, Evan Parker, Ralph Alessi, Kris Davis, John Taylor, Rufus Reid, Paul Dunmall, Django Bates, Van Morrison, and many others.
