The duo of Nate Wooley and Ryan Sawyer got its start under the name “Baring Teeth” at Brooklyn. Originally a wall of screaming noise, the duo expanded its language over two decades. The two musicians now veer through the history of jazz, rock, punk, noise, and ambient styles, always dancing on the thin line between being feral and elegant.
Nate Wooley is an improvisor, composer, and writer. As an instrumentalist, he has been a soloist with composers such as Annea Lockwood, Éliane Radigue and Anthony Braxton. His solo trumpet improvisations have been hailed as “exquisitely hostile” and “the most progressive campfire music ever.” His compositions are evolving amalgams of improvisation, folk music, text, and immersive experiences.
Ryan Sawyer is a musician (percussion), composer, academic, and visual artist. In 2024, he performed as the drummer of Zoh Amba's Sun Ensemble at the 11th OCT-LOFT Jazz Festival. After years of peerage in underground and jazz scenes, he has played alongside Marshall Allen, Boredoms, Thurston Moore, TV On The Radio, Charles Gayle, Rhys Chatham among countless others. Playing with enormously high-grade collaborators has informed his performance and arrangements, helping to shape the output of him into a rare channel of vast textures, dynamics and moods formed from drumkit alone. One of his unique approaches to improvisation and composition includes free-form shepherding of sound through drums and voice.
