Since erupting forth in 1991, the seminal punk jazz/brutal prog/no wave band The Flying Luttenbachers has steadily deconstructed music, reason, and all notions of sanity on 20 releases and more than 400 live performances around the world. Predictably unpredictable, the Luttenabachers’ fierce, modernistic approach draws from inspirations like no wave, free jazz, metal, noise, modern classical, free improvisation, punk and the blackest humor possible.
After a ten year break, a NYC-based Flying Luttenbachers emerged again in 2017 and made a week long tour of France, performing an hour long set of classic material from the entire catalog and culminating at the Sonic Protest festival in Paris.
The latest incarnation of this iconoclastic unit heads in yet another bold new direction… After the four full-length albums and numerous shows and tours with the New York-based lineups of the band (featuring various combinations of Tim Dahl, Matt Nelson, Brandon Seabrook, Katie Battistoni, Alex Ward, Wendy Eisenberg, Henry Kaiser, Chris Welcome and Evan Lipson), erstwhile leader and founding member Weasel Walter decided to change up the scenery by heading back to the original ground zero—Chicago. The latest formation is a stripped down power trio featuring Mr. Walter on guitar, bassist Luke Polipnick, and drummer James Paul Nadien.
Weasel Walter is a multi-instrumentalist, composer and improviser best known for leading the seminal punk-jazz/no-wave/brutal-prog band The Flying Luttenbachers on 20 full-length releases from 1992 to present. During '90s, Mr. Walter was a catalyst in the Chicago music underground, spearheading a new wave of improvised music activity with peers like Kevin Drumm, Ken Vandermark and Jim O'Rourke and playing in experimental rock bands centered around the Skin Graft record label such as the Flying Luttenbachers, Lake Of Dracula, and Bobby Conn. Relocating from Chicago to Oakland in 2003, Walter continued down these streams, performing and recording with musicians like Evan Parker, Roscoe Mitchell, Marshall Allen, John Butcher, Henry Kaiser, William Winant, Sandy Ewen, Peter Evans, Damon Smith, Vinny Golia, and Mary Halvorson as well as playing with bands like XBXRX, Burmese, Lair of the Minotaur, and Erase Errata. Luke Polipnick is a Chicago-based multi instrumentalist and composer/improviser, and iconoclastic guitarist. He has worked widely in the free improvisation, jazz, extreme metal, and popular music worlds. He is an in-demand sideman and collaborator for his unique creative voice, energy, and flexibility, and he leads numerous bands ranging from highly composed indie-prog/art rock of Lean Years, the fully improvised extreme metal of Abhorrent Expanse, and electronica-fried improv in Pixilated Cryptids. He plays bass guitar in The Flying Luttenbachers and can be heard on their last two records.
James Paul Nadien is a percussionist, composer, improviser and the founder of JPN Records. He is currently based in New York City, where he can be found playing a wide variety of music on any given evening. His polymathic abilities have made him one of New York's most in-demand musicians. His free-jazz/brutal prog trio, Toadal Package, as well as his chamber quartet, TYPO!, feature his complex original compositions, combining all of his influences into one highly focused stream. He has performed and recorded with hundreds of artists including but not limited to Joe Morris, William Parker, Tony Malaby, Anthony Braxton, Anthony Coleman, Yuhan Su, Matt Mitchell, Vinny Golia, Darius Jones, Steve Swell, Brandon Seabrook and many more.
