La Rockeuse du désert (The Desert Rocker) is an intimate, spiritual and profound portrait of the extraordinary Hasna El Becharia, a pioneer Gnawa artist and the first female musician to break through the historic social and gender barriers by practicing a traditional musical style confined to men for centuries. A singularly talented artist, she empowers and inspires women of all ages by reclaiming the musical tradition, and leads women to redefine their roles and challenge cultural norms, one musical performance at a time.
This film is intimate while revealing a universal story that continues to plague many cultures, but what makes it original is first of all Hasna's incredible personality and the fact that her absolute weapon against all forms of discrimination and prohibition is music. Filmed in France, Canada, Algeria and Morocco, La Rockeuse du désert combines classic documentary form and cinema verité, it was shot through over 5 years and includes more than 20 years of archives.

Sara Nacer is an Algerian-Canadian documentary director, producer, and screenwriter based in Montreal. Drawing on her bicultural background—both Algerian and Canadian—she is a multidisciplinary creator whose practice blends image-making with cultural engagement. Her creative work consistently focuses on cultural memory, music, and identity and her films often take individuals as starting points, using music to explore broader social and cultural issues, with an emphasis on cross-cultural storytelling and poetic expression. She strives to build cultural bridges between Algeria, France, and Canada, engaging deeply with themes such as tradition and modernity, gender and culture.
Among her notable works, Nacer's early documentary Qu'ils partent tous! (Let Them All Leave!, 2019) focuses on Algeria's social movements. She later gained international recognition with La Rockeuse du désert (The Desert Rocker, 2022), a film that has received multiple awards.
Beyond directing, Nacer is also active in cultural curation, music projects, and film festivals, and is widely recognized as a dynamic creator committed to fostering dialogue and connection between cultures.
